It looks like the American leg of Al Gore’s Live Earth global warming concert may now be held in New York City. The concerts will take place on all seven continents on 7/7/07, and while the original target was Washington, DC, organizers have had a hard time securing a location. Now, the Live Earth concert could be held at the Big Apple’s Prospect Park, Randall’s Island or Shea Stadium, according to Variety.
Plans for a simultaneous day of global rock concerts to draw attention to the problem of global warming have run into trouble in Washington.
Organiser of the gigs, former presidential candidate turned environmental campaigner Al Gore, had wanted to hold North America’s concert in the US capital but Republican senators are reportedly attempting to stall his plans to stage the show on the Congressional lawn.
However, Republican senators have reportedly now delayed making a decision about whether the US part of the green gig should be held on Washington’s west lawn by using legislative procedures to effectively bury the request put forward on behalf of organisers. (More information on inthenews.co.uk)
That’s the message coming from Capitol Hill, where Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) introduced a resolution yesterday to allow Gore to stage a global-warming concert on the Capitol grounds.
If the bipartisan resolution is approved by the Senate and the House, it will clear the way for the former vice president to produce his free “Live Earth” concert on July 7 on the Capitol’s west side.
Gore and other promoters had hoped to stage the nighttime event on the Mall but have been unable to secure a permit from the National Park Service. Gore called Reid to request his help, according to the senator’s spokesman, Jim Manley. (Read the rest of the article on WashingtonPost.com)
As mentioned by NME.com New York’s Shea Stadium is rumoured to be hosting the north American leg of Live Earth the Concert For A Climate In Distress, on July 7.
Glide reports that the fact the resident baseball team The Mets will be away from the park from June 29 to July 11 suggests the Shea Stadium rumour to be true.
Shea Stadium famously played host to The Beatles in 1966, as well as shows by The Police and Bruce Springsteen.
The place for USA Live Earth concert is still unknown. All we know is information that the concert should be somewhere on the East Coast. Where exactly would you like to see this concert? Let us know in the comments.
